12th April Marvel Comic Releases

Last week’s new comic book day was a little thin on the ground, but this week is more than making up for it!

Single Issues:

Captain America: Cold War Alpha by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing and Tochi Onyebuchi

Bucky Barnes is the Outer Circle’s New Revolution, and he has enacted his deadliest move yet – an alliance with Sam Wilson’s nemesis, the White Wolf. When Steve Rogers’ adopted son, Ian, A.K.A. Nomad, is abducted by someone Steve thought was a friend, he suspects Bucky’s hand at work and calls upon the people who know Ian best – Sam Wilson, Sharon Carter and Misty Knight – to help him get to the bottom of the attack. Has Bucky finally gone too far? Why has Nomad been taken, and what does it have to do with a portal to Dimension Z opening over a secret battleground in Alaska? The Symbol of Truth and the Sentinel of Liberty reunite for a pulse-pounding crossover event that will make them question everything they believe in-and each other.

Before reading this, you will want to read The Symbol Of Truth and The Sentinel Of Liberty, to be caught up with Steve, Sam and Bucky’s current storylines.

Free Comic Book Day – Spider-Man And Venom by Zeb Wells and Al Ewing

For years, the symbiote family in the Marvel Universe has grown, and the latest smash-hit run on VENOM is no exception. With the violent and dangerous Meridius readying for war, the stage is set for catastrophe and this year’s Free Comic Book Day will mark the beginning of the end of the symbiotes!

I’d say that it’s a good idea to have basic knowledge of Spider-Man and Venom, but this comic is designed as a good starting point for new and old readers. And, it’s available for free, so how can you go wrong?

Free Comic Book Day: Spidey And Friends by Various

Spidey, Ghost-Spider, and Miles will face off against Green Goblin, Doc Ock and more in this FREE spectacular special. Filled with easy-to-read comic stories based on the hit Disney Junior show, this book is perfect for the youngest readers aged 5-7.  Young fans will even be able to test their wall-crawling skills with thrilling interactive activity pages!  Kids will love this not-to-be-missed comic: the perfect primer for the newest generation of Spider-Fans!

Like in the synopsis, this is perfect for younger readers, and fans of the Disney Junior show. And again, this one is free so it’s a really cheap way to keep the kids entertained during the half term!

Guardians Of The Galaxy by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing

One year ago, the Guardians of the Galaxy were destroyed. Their optimistic future shattered by the betrayal of one of their own. Now they ride the space lanes of a lawless corner of the galaxy, trying to outrun their tragedy. Can they rediscover their heroism and humanity on the bleakest frontier? Can they forgive the failures of their past? Or will they fade into the dark, eternally unforgiven?

Part of a new, ongoing series for the Guardians, which is part of a larger event that will be starting later in the year. I would not recommend this for people new to the Guardians, but I will have a huge range of explainers coming up in May that will help out with this!

Marvel Voices: Spider-Verse by Cody Ziglar and Various

AN AWESOME ASSEMBLY OF MARVEL’S MIGHTIEST! An all-new selection of interdimensional adventures from some of Marvel’s freshest and finest creators, each bringing their own unique perspectives and stylings to the Web of Life and Destiny! What new spiders will find their way to the Marvel Multiverse, and what familiar faces will join them for this titanic and oversized issue?!

Best if you have Spider-Verse knowledge before reading this – I’ll have a huge amount of guides going up in time for Across The Spider-Verse’s release. Otherwise, this is another part of the Marvel Voices collection, celebrating diverse tales by diverse authors.

Bind Ups:

Ghost Rider: Shadow Country by Ben Percy

Benjamin Percy’s run on Ghost Rider continues, and Johnny Blaze encounters none other than Wolverine!

After the motorcycle rally at Hell’s Backbone, Wolverine and Ghost Rider are brought together – but are they enemies or allies in the war against the shadow country? Meanwhile, there’s a new splinter group within the F.B.I. charged with quelling the rise in supernatural activity in the country, helmed by Agent Talia Warroad. She’s aiming to enlist the dangerous power of the Spirit of Vengeance! Plus, still reeling from his time in Hayden’s Falls, Blaze seeks the counsel of a seer named Necro the Tattooist, who uses his needle to bring dark truths to the surface about the legacy of the Ghost Rider!

The first volume is called Unchained.

Lightning doesn’t strike twice!

Nova: Sam Alexander by Zeb Wells and Jeph Loeb

The new Human Rocket roars into action! Sam Alexander is a kid bound by the gravity of a small town – and a father whose ridiculous, drunken fairy tales about a “Nova Corps” were just another heavy burden. But lucky for Sam, his troubles will soon be a billion miles away! A hand-me-down helmet has unlocked Sam Alexander’s heroic legacy – and even as the Guardians of the Galaxy try to train him, the helmet will soon lead the newest Nova into a massive intergalactic conflict! Plus: Nova takes on the Superior Spider-Man, but can he handle his overwhelming first taste of true cosmic power? For Sam Alexander, the future possibilities are endless – and the horizon is only an instant away!

This collects the first two volumes in the Nova: Sam Alexander run, which covers his origins. If you already own this run, then feel free to ignore this entirely.

Shang-Chi And The Ten Rings by Gene Luen Yang

Shang-Chi has acquired the mystical Ten Rings – and now, their secret origins are revealed!
The true origin of the Ten Rings! Shang-Chi has gained possession of some of the most powerful weapons in the universe – but so much concentrated energy has not gone unnoticed. Now, every bounty hunter, assassin and evil syndicate in the Marvel Universe is coming to take the Rings from him! Not great timing then for old flame, Leiko Wu, to show up with a mission to save their old spy friend, Clive Reston. Can Shang-Chi save his friend while protecting the Ten Rings at the same time? Or will the responsibility and the truth of the Rings be too much for him to bear?

A new look at the origin of the Ten Rings – I would recommend knowing a bit about Shang-Chi, but otherwise I’d say you can read without too much issue!

X-Men Epic Collection: Legacies by Scott Lobdell and Fabian Nicieza

Magneto and Stryfe cast a long shadow over mutantkind! The X-Men travel to Russia when Colossus visits his sister, Illyana, formerly the New Mutants’ Magik! But the sadistic Soul Skinner is loose, and the Russian government will do anything to stop him – even if that means shattering Colossus’ family! Then, when Magneto’s fanatical followers, the Acolytes, return, could it mean that the Master of Magnetism is still alive? Plus: Siena Blaze strikes as the Upstarts’ deadly game continues! Betsy Braddock returns – but if Betsy’s back, who is Psylocke?! And the X-Cutioner targets the dying Mastermind as mutants worldwide begin falling mysteriously ill! What horror has Stryfe unleashed on mutantkind – and can the X-Men cope with his lethal legacy?

The previous volumes are: Children Of The Atom, Lonely Are The Hunted, The Sentinels Live, It’s Always Darkest Before Dawn, Second Genesis, Proteus, The Fate of The Phoenix, I Magneto, The Gift, Dissolution & Rebirth, Mutant Genesis, Bishop’s Crossing and X-Cutioner’s Song. There are a LOT of missing volumes though, so be prepared to miss a tonne of the story between volumes!

And that’s everything coming out this week! What’s going on your pull list? I’m looking at Captain America, Guardians Of The Galaxy and Shang-Chi!
