A Guide To Vita Ayala’s Marvel Comics

Today I want to highlight a Marvel writer I’ve mentioned multiple times, but never given the full spotlight to – Vita Ayala.

Vita, who is trans and non-binary and goes by they/them pronouns, is a more recent writer to enter the Marvel writer’s room, but has been taking it by storm from the minute they arrived, so here’s a guide to everything they’ve ever written for Marvel!

The Single Issues:

Heroes Reborn: Night-Gwen issue 1

INTRODUCING: NIGHTBIRD! By day, Dr. Gwendolyn Stacy is Ravencroft Asylum’s leading psychiatrist. But by night, she dons the guise of the vigilante known as Nightbird! But how did this happen? Why did this happen? And what does Kyle Richmond, the Nighthawk, have to do with it? There may not be any time to find outt, because Nightbird must hunt down a new killer called the Jackal!

This is part of the Heroes Reborn event, where we are basically following alternate versions of the heroes we know and love, this one, obviously, focuses on the character we know as Spider-Gwen.

Ghost-Spider Annual issue 1

GHOST-SPIDER BATTLES FOR HER LIFE IN MURDERWORLD! Gwen Stacy is trying to balance her social life with her hero life in the 616…but what will she do when she comes face-to-face with Arcade’s Murderworld?! A short story collected within the Seanan McGuire Ghost-Spider run.

Part of the Marvel Knights 20th anniversary special Marvel released.

Marvel Voices issue 1

Wolverine: Black, White and Blood issue 2

SHARPEN YOUR CLAWS FOR ROUND TWO OF WOLVERINE’S ALL-NEW ALL-STAR BLOODY BATTLES! The adventures of WOLVERINE continue in the visceral black, white and blood red format! Legendary X-scribe Chris Claremont re-teams with the incomparable Salvador Larroca to bring LOGAN back to Madripoor as PATCH, where he and KATE PRYDE face their toughest battle yet. Then, Saladin Ahmed and Kev Walker build a life-or-death catch-22, courtesy of the maniacal ARCADE, that will force Wolverine to make a life-or-death decision! Vita Ayala and Greg Land put Wolverine on a mission to stop a “cure” for the X-gene where he’ll cross paths with his deadliest foe: SABRETOOTH!

Part of the Black, White And Blood title, where each section is written by a different writer, hence the involvement of Saladin Ahmed and Chris Claremont in this issue.

Empyre: X-Men issue 3

ALIENS! PLANT-MEN! MUTANTS! ZOMBIES! OLD WOMEN! DEMONS! EXPLOSIONS! These issues have more than you ever dreamed to ask for. And then some.

At long last, Shuri faces her destiny. With her brother gone and Wakanda in peril, the Black Panther is needed. But the Princess of Wakanda is more than any mask — and she’s about to face a threat unlike any Wakanda has seen before. The start of a two-part story by guest creative team Vita Ayala & Paul Davidson!

Vita did a two-issue long guest spot in this run, which was usually headed up by Nnedi Okorafor.

Bind Ups:

Marvel Action Black Panther volume 2: Rise Together

Follow the adventures of T’Challa, the Black Panther, his sister Shuri and the fantastic citizens of Wakanda in these middle grade friendly adventures!

Every 25 years, Wakanda’s ruler trades places with one of their subjects to gain perspective on their kingdom. T’Challa’s turn has come, and while working in a Vibranium refinery, he uncovers a plot to sell the priceless metal on the black market. Plus, when one of the Black Panther’s advisers suffers an injury during an attack, the adviser requests the aid of a traditional healer over modern medicine. Shuri scoffs at the idea, but soon a curse forces her on an epic quest.

The second volume in a kid-friendly Black Panther comic series – the first volume is by Kyle Baker.

New Mutants volumes 1, 2 and 3

On the edge of Krakoan society, the New Mutants let loose in the Wild Hunt! Going big, blowing things up, and combining powers to see who can be crowned king of the mountain. But something lurks in the trees. Something old…and hungry. And its favorite prey is young mutants! As Karma and Dani delve deeper into their nightmares, a spider sets his eyes on the most vulnerable among the team. And as the Wild Hunt goes on, someone vanishes without a trace, plans long in motion begin to unfurl — and children who play at being adults must now prepare for the fight of their lives.

Vita headed up the New Mutants line in the recent Krakoa era of the X-Men – their storyline starts after the X Of Swords event, and they were joined by Danny Lore and Charlie Jane Anders for the fourth volume.

Children Of The Atom

When did the X-Men get sidekicks?! Now! Don’t miss the debut of the greatest teenage super hero team of all time! They’ve learned from the best – now they’re ready to be put to the test! But who the heck are these kids, and where do they come from? Are they just drawing their inspiration from the X-Men’s original lineup, or is there a deeper connection? And how will the X-Men react when this untested team of young heroes makes the scene in their name? Prepare for an action-packed adventure that propels the Dawn of X into the next generation!

Another part of the Krakoa-era X-Men run.

Nebula has grown under the shadows of Thanos and Gamora, but no longer! With her eyes set on a top-secret device, Nebula has big plans for her future—and she’s not about to let anyone get in her way! But her goal may end up costing her more than she’s willing to pay after a showdown with one of the cosmos most feared bounty hunters….

This Nebula run sadly got cancelled after two issues thanks to Covid-19, but they are still available to read if you want more of Nebula!

2020 Ironheart

Written by Vita Ayala and Danny Lore with art by David Messina, the Arno Stark–funded crackdown on artificial intelligence is in full swing. That means that Riri Williams and N.A.T.A.L.I.E., the A.I. based on Riri’s deceased best friend, are in for a world of trouble. Can they weather the coming storm together, or will 2020 tear them apart?

A two-issue long Ironheart tie-in to the Iron Man 2020 run.

Morbius: Old Wounds

Morbius is the Living Vampire…but is he more? For years, Nobel Prize-winning biologist Dr. Michael Morbius has been struggling to find a cure for his unique case of vampirism. Now, for the first time in longer than he can remember, his salvation may be tantalizingly within reach! But the path to regaining his humanity is littered with dangers — and worse! In a leap of faith and desperation, Morbius takes matters into his own hands — but the results are monstrous, and now his lust for blood threatens to overwhelm him like never before! Old-school Marvel villain the Melter has resurfaced at just the wrong time — and he just might become the first in a long line of victims in the reinvigorated vampire’s bloody path! Michael Morbius only wanted his soul back, but how much will it cost?

This volume is actually a pretty good place to start reading Morbius comics, if the film intrigued you about the character.

Age Of X-Men: Prisoner X

The Danger Room holds the worst of the worst in the Age of X-Man! When you break the law in paradise, you aren’t sent to just any prison. You’re sent to the Danger Room…a penitentiary filled with the roughest and meanest mutants who don’t fit into X-Man’s utopia. They each have a reason for being there, and they’re all primed and ready to kill each other. But that’s about to change, because the Danger Room’s newest prisoner has just arrived…Lucas Bishop! As Bishop navigates between the various mutant gangs to find the truth beyond the walls of the prison, can he trust the other inmates – including Magneto’s daughter, Polaris? Or will Bishop have to break out solo?

A tie-in to the Age Of X-Men event.

Jessica Jones: Playing With Fire

The safe choice? Walk away. But when has Jessica Jones ever played it safe?

Jessica Jones has made an art of ignoring her particular brand of super-powered trauma. But these days, she’s giving the whole “self-care” thing a try. Seeing a therapist, finding healthier coping mechanisms (read: no business-hours drinking), working toward not wanting to punch things all the time. Maybe even taking the occasional case that won’t eat her alive. A simple missing persons case seems like just the ticket. But when a boy’s body turns up under an overpass in what looks like a cut-and-dried OD, Jessica can’t let it go and dives headlong into an obsessive search for answers.

This is actually an audiobook instead of a comic, but because Vita contributed to the writing of it, I wanted to add it in here.

And that’s everything Vita Ayala has written for Marvel! What are you going to check out first – I personally recommend the X-Men run!
