21st December Marvel Comic Releases

This will be my final blog post of the year before I take a two-week break for the holidays and new year – so let’s get into this week’s new comic book day releases!

Single Issues:

Dark Web: Ms Marvel by Sabir Pirzada

You know her, you love her! But this time, Kamala Khan may be in over her head. Fresh off her first few weeks working as an intern at Oscorp, MS. MARVEL finds herself as the last line of defense against a bunch of deadly and dangerous experiments going HAYWIRE thanks to the Spider-Epic DARK WEB! Things get even WORSE when Kamala finds herself in LIMBO, with no choice but to fight her way out!

Ms Marvel joins the Dark Web event, so make sure you know Kamala and her powerset, and have caught up with the previous Dark Web issues.

Dark Web: Mary Jane And Black Cat by Jed MacKay

From Jed MacKay (MOON KNIGHT, IRON CAT) and Vincenzo Carratu comes one of the most explosive and kick-ass adventures in Marvel Memory! Set against the explosive backdrop of DARK WEB, Mary Jane Watson and Felicia Hardy find themselves thrown into one another’s paths and then into LIMBO! But SOMETHING HAS CHANGED WITH MJ! And she’s not the only one keeping secrets – Felicia’s got a guilty conscience and it’s playing havoc with their escape plan!

Two more join in with Dark Web!

X-Men Annual by Steve Foxe

THE NEWEST X-MAN BURNS UP THE SPOTLIGHT!
In a surprising turn of events, Firestar, who had not yet fully embraced Krakoa, was elected to the X-Men at the Hellfire Gala. Her history with her mutant nature is a tumultuous one for many reasons but her record as a hero is exemplary. Can she wrestle with her past in time to rise to the occasion thrust upon her?

The next part in the X-Men saga unfolded on Krakoa – I’ll be updating my reading guide in the new year, so watch this space!

Bind Ups:

Captain America Symbol Of Truth: Homeland by Tochi Onyebuchi and others

Captain America soars again in a new era for truth and liberty! The world is finally ready for two Caps, so Sam Wilson picks up a shield once more – and enters a world of trouble! Following a lead from Misty Knight, Sam intercepts a mysterious group hijacking what appears to be an empty train. But as Sam and his partner, the new Falcon, dig deeper, they discover that this plot may be connected to a crucial piece of Captain America history – and, surprisingly, to the nation of Wakanda! But how is Deadpool involved?! To find answers, Sam Wilson and Wade Wilson must team up in Latveria – and you know what that means! When Doctor Doom learns of the interlopers in his midst, can Cap escape with his life?

The latest Sam Wilson Captain America run, so make sure you’re all caught up on him, the new Falcon and Wakanda! I’ll have more coming up about Deadpool, Doctor Doom and Latveria as the MCU introduces them!

Fantastic Four: Life Story by Mark Russell

An incredible exploration of the fabulous foursome’s lives if they aged in real time across the decades! Amid the backdrop of the Space Race, an accident gives the Fantastic Four great powers and entangles them in the history of their planet. But as the years pass, the four heroes struggle to find their role in a rapidly changing world. As Sue continues to fight for social causes, Reed becomes increasingly obsessed with preparing for the prophesied arrival of Galactus! And in the end, after six decades of triumphs and tragedies, love and loss, can the aging heroes make a final stand against the implacable might of Doctor Doom?

If you’re new to the Fantastic Four, then this could be an interesting introduction – as it’s not set in the main Marvel Comic timeline, so you should be able to follow along with just basic knowledge of the team, Doom and Galactus.

Gwenpool Omnibus by Christopher Hastings and others

Superfan becomes super hero! Gwen Poole was an avid comic book reader – until she found herself transported into the Marvel Universe! Now, surrounded by characters that she knows everything about – including their secret identities! – and fully aware of the tropes of super hero storytelling, Gwen is determined not to be an “extra” in this brave new world. But her attention-seeking journey from mercenary to Avenger (okay, West Coast, but still…) is complicated when she learns how to manipulate the comic books she herself appears in! As her continuity dramas get ever more convoluted, will Gwen go big…or go home?

The origin story of Gwenpool, in one big, bonkers, collected edition! With this character, it does help to have a reasonable knowledge of the Marvel Universe, as Gwen makes a lot of references to it and runs into a lot of characters, but I read this very early in my comic book reading career and was reasonably alright with it. I’ll leave it up to you as to whether you give it a go or not, personally, I recommend it for how fun it is, but she’s generally not involved in larger storylines so she’s not essential reading you have to catch up on immediately.

Knights Of Pendragon Omnibus by Dan Abnett and John Tomlinson

Since the days of King Arthur, the mystical Green Knight has been the protector and embodiment of Britain. Now, as Earth faces environmental disaster, several unlikely champions – including detective Dai Thomas, reporter Kate McClellan and writer Ben Gallagher – find themselves empowered to protect the land! But what are the mysterious spirits of the Pendragon? And can these newly minted heroes – along with Union Jack and WWII hero Albion – unravel the mystery of the Omni-Corporation and stave off the arcane evil of the Bane? It’s a moody and suspenseful thriller as only Marvel UK can provide! And when the Knights formally become a superteam, they’ll face the menaces of Mys-Tech, Baron Blood, Death’s Head II – and the Bane’s terrifying master, the Red Lord!

A series from the 90s, but not essential unless you want to know more about the Arthurian side of the Marvel Universe.

Knights Of X by Tini Howard

The gates to Otherworld are closed, and Captain Britain is trapped on the wrong side! Usurpers Merlyn and King Arthur are now in control of the Lunatic Citadel. Furies the size of Sentinels raze villages in their hunt for the witchbreed. Bloodthirsty vampires roam. Cut off from Krakoa, Betsy Braddock is Otherworld’s only hero – and to save her people, she must recruit a roundtable of her own! Ten Knights of X will set out on a dangerous quest, but not all will make it to the end. Can those who survive locate the holy grail of mutantkind? The fate of Otherworld lies at the center of Krakoa’s future!

Speaking of the Arthurian side, this is the latest in the Excalibar run. Again, I’ll have an update on the current X-Men run in the new year, so you’ll know where this falls in the run, and whether you have these issues in a different bind up set.

Legion Of X by Si Spurrier volume 1

Krakoa has laws – but does it have justice? The island-nation must safeguard itself
against those who would damage its peace or traumatize its people. The lost must be
found, and the wicked must face redemption – or retribution. It’s up to the swashNightcrawler to keep the spark alive on the ground – and Professor X’s son, Legion, to host his unique team in the psychedelic mindspace called the Altar! With Pixie on point, Juggernaut as a one-man riot squad and a host of X-favorites on the beat, the Legion of X will do anything to protect mutants’ right to pursue hapand hope. But who is the Skinjacker possessing innocent mutants, and will Arakkii badass Weaponless Zsen be friend or foe? The Destiny of X bares its heart and soul right here!

Again, I’ll update the reading order, and where this volume fits in the run, in the new year.

Miles Morales Spider-Man omnibus volume 2 by Brian Michael Bendis

Welcome to the Marvel Universe, Miles Morales! After the dimension-shattering Secret Wars, the Ultimate Spider-Man is starting a new life on a new world! And Miles will have to find his feet quickly when he goes up against one of the biggest bads in the Marvel U! The villainous Black Cat plots to get her claws in this new Spidey, but will Miles find romance with the other-dimensional Spider-Gwen? And Spidey gets caught in the middle when Marvel’s heroes square off in a second Civil War! Plus: The secret history of Miles’ dad…agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.! Miles and Peter Parker team up to take on a familiar face! And here comes an all-new, all-deadly Sinister Six!

The second omnibus in the original Miles Morales run – so if you want to know more about this Spider-Man before Across The Spider-Verse comes out next year, this is the run to read!
