M’Baku Character Profile

Name: M’Baku

Superhero Name: Man-Ape

Created By: Roy Thomas and John Buscema

Panel from Black Panther (2001) by Sal Velluto

Played By: Winston Duke

Powers: Superhuman speed, strength, agility and durability, as well as being an expert in hand-to-hand combat.

Mini Bio: M’Baku was born to the Jabari tribe in Wakanda, and is known for being the second-best fighter in the country, after only T’Challa, the Black Panther himself. He is known for wanting the throne of Wakanda for himself, and working towards usurping T’Challa whenever he gets a chance, as he disagrees with the modernisation of the country.

M’Baku prefers Wakanda to stay as it once was, without its technological advancements. During his fights with T’Challa, he has been bested multiple times, and has since been banned from Wakanda itself.

Since then, he has worked as a mercenary, joined supervillain teams called the Lethal Legion, and the Masters Of Evil, tried to take down the Avengers, and nearly died multiple times, though he has always come back.

Interesting trivia: Less trivia, more of a note – M’Baku’s powers come from drinking the blood of a gorilla, and his costume comes from racist stereotypes from when he was created. I have omitted as much as I can, because I thoroughly oppose racism and don’t want to repeat those racist stereotypes.

First Comic Appearance: The Avengers (1969)
