Who Is Gorr The God Butcher?

Gorr the God Butcher is an alien from an unknown planet who is determined to wipe out every god to ever exist in the Marvel Universe, no matter who they are, what they represent, or if he’s ever met them before.

Why Is Gorr Killing The Gods?

Gorr is killing the gods in revenge. He was born on a planet with very little resources and he and his people lived on the brink of starvation for most of their lives. But, his people were devout to their gods, always praying for salvation which never came.

When Gorr’s parents, his wife and his children had all died of starvation, he renounced his gods, feeling as if they didn’t exist. He was then proven wrong after he was exiled by his people, when he witnessed two gods warring, one of which was Knull.

When the unnamed god fighting Knull asked Gorr for help, Gorr was enraged by the idea as no god had ever helped him or his people, Knull’s sword of living darkness bonded to Gorr, which he used to kill the god who wanted his help. From then on, Gorr vowed to destroy all the gods in revenge for his plight.

Which Gods Did Gorr Kill?

There is not a precise list, but Gorr is stated to have killed gods of fear, war, earthquakes, revenge, genocide, plague, blood, wrath, jealousy, death and degradation, as well as a few gods of poetry and flowers.

Possibly the most significant victim was Falligar, who is seen in the trailer for Love And Thunder in what can only be described as a scene ripped straight from the comic. Falligar was the god of the Galatic Frontier and the champion of the Tournament Of Immortals, meaning he was a pretty strong god.

How Did Gorr Meet Thor?

Gorr and Thor have battled multiple times throughout the centuries – the first met in the 9th century, then again while Thor is an Avenger in the 21st century, and a third when Thor is an old man and King of Asgard. Each time they battled, Thor thought Gorr was dead, and each time he was proven wrong.

Even after Gorr’s eventual death, he left his mark on Thor, as he was responsible for Thor becoming unworthy, leaving him unable to lift Mjolnir. I would say more, but that would be spoilers for the comics!

Where Can I Read More About Gorr?

Gorr’s storyline takes place entirely in the Jason Aaron Thor run, with a brief appearance in the King In Black event.
