Who Is Marvel’s Illuminati?

The Illuminati have made it to the MCU, in the form of Mordo, Captain Carter, Captain Marvel (Maria Rambeau edition), Reed Richards, Charles Xavier and Black Bolt!

But, just who are the Illuminati in the Marvel Universe? What do they do? Who’s part of the team? Why were they even created in the first place?

I’ve got all your answers right here!

Who’s On The Marvel Illuminati Team?

The Marvel Comic Illuminati lineup is fairly different compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe one – Professor X, Mr Fantastic and Black Bolt are all still members, but the lineup is usually filled out by Doctor Strange, Iron Man and Namor. Black Panther was also asked to join, but he refused on the grounds that superheroes making decisions for the Earth in secret was what had caused the Kree/Skrull war in the first place.

Why Was The Illuminati Made?

In light of the Kree/Skrull war (aka Secret Invasion), Iron Man called these specific heroes, each one representing a different section of the superhero community (Charles = mutants, Stephen = the sorcerers, Reed = the superhumans and the scientists, Namor = the king of Atlantis, as well as a mutant, Black Panther = king of the scientifically advanced Wakanda and occasional Avenger, Black Bolt = leader of the Inhumans, Iron Man = leader of the Avengers and one of the world’s greatest minds), to pool information to stop another alien invasion, as it turned out that each person had had a bit of information on the Kree and the Skrulls, and had all the pieces been put together, the crisis could have been averted.

After a lot of arguing (mostly from Namor), it was agreed that the group would meet in secret and share information and discuss problems. Charles Xavier would use his mind-reading abilities to make sure that nobody betrayed the others.

What Does The Illuminati Do?

The Illuminati essentially are a think tank, made to pool resources and information to help save the Earth from various threats, be that alien, magical, or anything else. Though, they do also sometimes take action – such as each taking and hiding an Infinity Stone, to keep them out of the wrong hands, sending the Hulk to space when he can’t control his rage, and convincing Noh-Varr to protect the Earth instead of destroying it.

Which Comics Do The Illuminati Appear In?

The Illuminati’s main stories are collected in New Avengers: Illuminati (2006) by Brian Michael Bendis. The collection is a series of one-shots, each one covering a time the group came together to discuss/take action against a threat, which usually connects to a larger event in the Marvel Universe.

Their only other appearance was in Marvel Now! New Avengers (2013) by Jonathan Hickman, which saw T’Challa bringing the team back together to stop their universe from colliding with another.

And that’s your basic rundown of the Illuminati! Do you want to see more of them in the MCU? Who would have you on the team? Let me know down below!
