27th April Marvel Comic Releases

We have a small crop of new releases this week, so let’s get into it!

Single Issues:

Amazing Spider-Man by Zeb Wells

Peter’s on the outs with the FF. He’s on the outs with the Avengers. He’s on the outs with Aunt May! No one wants to see Spider-Man – except for Doctor Octopus. Ock’s on Spider-Man’s tail and the Master Planner has something truly terrible planned for when he gets his tentacles on Spidey. All that, and what does Tombstone have planned?

Part of Marvel’s 60th-anniversary celebrations for Spider-Man, and such will probably feature a fair amount of callbacks/references to previous runs, so I’d recommend having at least some Spider-Man comic knowledge first.

Hulk Grand Design: Madness by Jim Rugg

Writer/artist Jim Rugg concludes his creative reimagining of the entire history of THE INCREDIBLE HULK in this can’t-miss oversized issue. You’ll never look at Bruce Banner the same way again!

You’ll want to read Jim Rugg’s Hulk Grand Designs: Monster first.

Knights Of X by Tini Howard

THE QUEST BEGINS HERE, WHERE MUTANTS ARE HATED AND FEARED ONCE AGAIN!
The gates to Otherworld are closed – and Captain Britain is trapped on the wrong side! Usurpers Merlyn and his right-hand man, King Arthur, are now in control of Lunatic Citadel. Furies the size of Sentinels raze villages to the ground in their hunt for the “witchbreed.” Cut off from Krakoa, Betsy Braddock is Otherworld’s only hero – and to save her people, Betsy must recruit a round table of her own. The Knights of X gather to restore the rightful order and rescue desperate mutants – but their quest is about to get so much bigger than that. This is the era of destiny…and the fate of Otherworld lies at the center of mutantkind’s future. Don’t miss this essential piece of the new Krakoa!

Make sure you’re all caught up on all things Dawn Of X (part two) and Reign Of X before reading this!

Bind Ups:

Thor by Jason Aaron Omnibus volume 1

Writer Jason Aaron and legendary artistic collaborators including Esad Ribic and Russell Dauterman begin a truly epic saga of Thor – whoever he or she may be! Across the ages, gods are vanishing, and Thor must unite with his past and future selves to stand against Gorr the God Butcher! Meanwhile, Malekith the Accursed begins a bloody rampage that will spread war throughout the realms. Which makes it a terrible time for the Odinson to be rendered unworthy of lifting Mjolnir! Another hero will hold the hammer high, fighting for Asgard and Midgard as Thor – the Goddess of Thunder! She’ll battle Malekith, Loki, Roxxon…and even Odin! But who is she under the mask? And what is this new Thor’s terrible secret?

The first part of Jason Aaron’s Thor run! If you’re looking forward to Thor: Love And Thunder, then you NEED to read this!

Spider-Gwen: Deal With The Devil by Jason Latour and more

Gwen and Miles, sitting in a tree…K-I-S-S-I-N-G! The most sensational web-spinners of the 21st century cross paths – and lock lips! Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales are two young heroes from different dimensions, but what threat could unite the Spider-Man and Spider-Woman of the new generation? The answer will rock both their worlds! First comes love, then comes much worse, then comes chaos in the Multiverse! Back in Gwen’s dimension, Matt Murdock – the Kingpin of Crime – is plotting something. But what does it have to do with Harry Osborn? Why will it pit Spider-Woman against the Wolverine of Earth-65? And what have Gwen’s band the Mary Janes been up to while she’s so busy?

Annoyingly, I can’t find the name of the previous bind up to this, but there are multiple different omnibuses’, so I’d recommend going for one of those instead, just to make sure you’ve got everything.

Phoenix Song: Echo by Rebecca Roanhorse

From the pages of AVENGERS comes a hero transformed! Maya Lopez, the deaf hero known as Echo, already knows a little bit about death and rebirth – and now she has become the new host of the cosmic Phoenix Force! With its galactic fire burning in her veins, the always adaptable Echo has begun learning how to use her incredible new abilities. But she’s about to come into conflict with certain X-Men who know exactly how dangerous the Phoenix can be! Meanwhile, an ancient demon wants to claim Echo’s newfound power – and the fight to keep the Phoenix Force safe will push Maya to her very limits! As the threads of her life unravel, Maya will face a journey of discovery through time. But destiny, and her Adversary, await in the White Hot Room!

I’d recommend reading Jason Aaron’s Avengers run before reading this, to get the context for why the Phoenix Force has focused on Echo.

Marvel Masterworks: Mighty Thor volume 21 by Doug Moench and more

The God of Thunder needs all the help he can get against the Bi-Beast. Enter: Iron Man! Then, it’s a Man-Beast/Man-Thing showdown with Thor in the middle – while Loki conspires to pit his adopted brother against the stone men of Easter Island and the great dragon Fafnir! As if that’s not drama enough, Thor faces a gauntlet of foes in Zaniac, the Dark Man and the Scarlet Scarab, plus a one-on-one showdown with Darkoth – with Mephisto lurking in the background! And who are Grult and the Menagerie of Rimthursar? This Masterworks edition also includes a double-sized Annual extravaganza pitting Thor and the gods against the Demogorge and “Sea of Destiny,” a tale beautifully rendered by master illustrator John Bolton.

The previous volumes are numbered volumes 1-20.

Doctor Strange: Sorcerer Supreme Omnibus volume 3 by David Quinn and more

Doctor Strange and the Midnight Sons are under siege – and Strange is transformed! Now the masked mystery magician known as Strange tests his sorcery against Doctor Doom and Namor! Clea returns, the Hulk is possessed and the sinister Salomé makes her move. But what is the connection between Strange and Dr. Vincent Stephens? And will the real Sorcerer Supreme please stand up? As Strange masters the power of catastrophe magic, Baron Mordo plots his arch-foe’s death! But can even the Master of the Mystic Arts prevent the birth of Chthon? Plus: An untold team-up with Spider-Man! An award-winning tale that will disturb you! And more!

The first two volumes are just named volumes 1 and 2, and I’d said it’s probably best to have some level of Doctor Strange knowledge before reading this – to make sure you’ve got knowledge of Clea and everyone else mentioned!

And that’s everything coming out this week! What’s on your pull list? I’m looking at Phoenix Song: Echo!
