Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Punisher and Defenders have all dropped on Disney Plus today, so I thought I would celebrate by giving you a bit of a guide to the Defenders and their comics!
Who Are The Defenders?
The Defenders are a team of very mismatched heroes, who are usually thrown together in battle when otherworldly villains attack the Earth.
Who Is On The Team?
The team’s roster changes practically with every appearance, but the original team consisted of Doctor Strange, Hulk and Namor. Characters like Valkyrie, Wasp and Hawkeye joined in the ’70s, and since then Beast, Iceman, Ghost Rider, Silver Surfer, Spider-Man, Wolverine, War Machine, Scarlet Witch, Nova, Luge Cage, Deadpool, Daimon Hellstrom have all joined the team. And, obviously, Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist have all been members over the years.
How Does The Team Get On?
Not very well most of the time, to say the least. The team very rarely get along with each other, and sometimes this can cause fights to break out. The Defenders are sometimes referred to as a ‘non-team’ as a result.

Which Comics Do You Recommend?
The best place to start would be Marvel Features (1971) by Roy Thomas, which is the team’s first-ever appearance.
From there, I’d recommend Defenders (July 2005) by Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis, which follows Doctor Strange bringing the team back together to help him save Wong from possession from the villain Nightmare.
But, if you want a team that reflects the Defenders TV show, then there is only Defenders (August 2017) by Brian Michael Bendis, it was his final work for Marvel, and was created to reflect the Netflix team.
