5th January Marvel Comic Releases

Happy new year everyone! Let’s kick things off with everything Marvel is releasing on 2022’s first New Comic Book Day!

Single Issues:

Darkhold: Omega by Steve Orlando

Five of the world’s greatest heroes – Spider-Man, Black Bolt, Blade, Wasp, and Iron Man – took a chance and read from the cursed Darkhold. They were meant to gain the power to fight back the dread elder god Chthon – but instead they’ve lost their minds and all they once held dear. Was it worth the cost? And who is their bold new ally – a product of Chthon’s dark dimension, or something else entirely? Steve Orlando and Cian Tormey deliver a heart-pounding conclusion to the epic Darkhold event – and introduce a hero who will take the Marvel Universe by storm!

This is the end of the Darkhold event, so make sure you’re all caught up before going near this! And if you’re confused as to what you need to read, I’ll have a guide up as soon as bind ups start coming out!

Elektra: Black, White and Blood by Charles Soule, Declan Shalvey and Leonardo Romero

Fact •  noun •  fakt – Definition of Fact
1 a: something that has actual existence
b: an actual occurrence

The first in a limited series following Elektra and some untold stories from her past!

Wastelanders: Doom by Torunn Gronbekk

DOCTOR DOOM helped wipe out the heroes on the Day the Villains Won, but even as he rules his domain in the Wastelands, a greater destiny calls to him. When a mysterious power blocks his oversight of a particular region, what he discovers will have ripple effects across the WASTELANDERS stories!

Part of the Wastelanders series, which ties into a podcaster series, again, when bind ups start coming out, I’ll do a guide on this series.

Bind Ups:

Ultimate Spider-Man Omnibus Volume 1 by Brian Michael Bendis

In the year 2000, Marvel launched the Ultimate Universe, reinventing Spider-Man and his mythos for a new millennium! Now, the first three years of Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley’s fan-favorite, award-winning take on the web-slinger are collected in one oversized volume! Relive Peter Parker’s early days as Spider-Man, learning to fight crime by trial and error as he struggles to balance his new life with the demands of high school: puberty, homework and dating! Even with the help of his best friend Mary Jane Watson, Peter has a heavy load to bear. But the neophyte Spider-Man is making enemies left and right – including the Green Goblin, the Kingpin, Doctor Octopus, Kraven the Hunter and the maniacal Venom – and unless he can rise to the occasion, Spidey may not survive until prom!

If you’re looking for a place to start with Spider-Man comics, especially after Spider-Man: No Way Home, then check this out! It’s the first volume, so you can jump right in!

Non-Stop Spider-Man Volume 1: Big Brain Play by Joe Kelly

Buckle up, tiger! Get ready for the most action-packed, pulse-pounding, adrenaline-pumping comic of all time! Once you read page one, panel one, Spider-Man just does not stop! A mystery at Empire State University thrusts the web-slinger into a thrilling adventure that starts in uptown Manhattan and takes him around the world – pitting Spidey against Marvel villains old, new and unbelievable and giving you a Spider-Man adventure (and a Spider-Man) the likes of which you’ve never seen! Something terrible is happening to ESU’s students – some of New York’s brightest young minds – and to save the day this time it’s going to take a side of Peter Parker neither you nor Peter thought existed. And the clock is ticking!

Aimed at newer, younger readers, so if you have a kid who wants to give Spider-Man comics a go, give them this!

Moon Knight Epic Collection: Shadows Of The Moon by Doug Moench

Ghosts, werewolves and things that go crazy in the night! Marvel’s multiple-personality midnight marauder takes the fight to the strangest rogues’ gallery in all of comics – from Arsenal, the one-man army, to the nun with a crossbow known as Stained Glass Scarlet. The Jester is no joke, for either Moon Knight or Daredevil. Then there’s Morpheus, who’s guaranteed to give you sleepless nights. But the old foes are the worst: enemies like Midnight Man and Bushman, who have returned to plague Marc Spector. Or is he Steven Grant? Jake Lockley? As always with Moon Knight, the voices inside his head can be as destructive as the lunatics trying to kill him! Doug Moench and Bill Sienkiewicz hit full stride in a super hero comic like no other!

The first in this Epic Collection is called Bad Moon Rising, and I’d highly recommend it if you’re looking to get some Moon Knight knowledge before his TV show comes out.

Marvel Masterworks: Invincible Iron Man Volume 14 by David Michelinie and more

The Marvel Masterworks continue David Michelinie and Bob Layton’s timeless IRON MAN run! Tony Stark recovers from his problems with the bottle by throwing himself into globetrotting business (and pleasure), but his enemies aren’t giving him an edge: The All-Devourer awaits in Hong Kong, the Titanium Man is ready to tango in Times Square and Force makes his brutal debut in the Bahamas! But sometimes it’s your friends you need to worry about the most: Can Stark beat back a hostile takeover of his company by Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.? With rich characterizations, a vibrant supporting cast and a steady stream of new armor designs, Michelinie and Layton prove they’re just getting started!

The first 13 in this series don’t have titles, so you just have to look for volume numbers.

Marvel Masterworks: Fantastic Four Volume 23 by John Byrne and more

The Marvel Masterworks continue John Byrne’s iconic FF run! When the Fantastic Four journey on a mind-bending quest through the Negative Zone, the opportunistic Annihilus attacks the undefended Baxter Building. It’s a gripping saga with two universes hanging in the balance! With Daredevil, She-Hulk and the Avengers racing to the FF’s side, Reed and Sue must make some drastic decisions concerning their future with the team! Plus: Galactus is back, he’s hungering and the Skrull homeworld is on the menu. The ramifications of this moment will be felt for generations! And speaking of Skrulls: Whatever happened to the first Skrulls to cross paths with the FF? Find out here! Also featuring a massive trove of FF entries from the OFFICIAL HANDBOOK OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE!

Same as above – the first 22 volumes are only numbered.

Mighty Marvel Masterworks: Fantastic Four Volume 2 – Micro-World by Stan Lee

The stories that built the Marvel Universe, from the brilliant minds of legendary creators – now available in an accessible new format the whole family can enjoy! As Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s foundational adventures of the Fantastic Four continue, see the Thing and the Hulk face off for the first time, beginning a comic book rivalry for the ages! The FF battle uncanny new adversaries including the Red Ghost and his Super Apes, the Mad Thinker and his Awesome Android, the Molecule Man, the Impossible Man and the multi-powered Super-Skrull! Plus: They’ll face rematches with the Puppet Master, the Sub-Mariner and their greatest enemy of all! Shrunk to microscopic size, can the Fantastic Four escape from the clutches of Doctor Doom? Perhaps they can…with a little help from Ant-Man!

The first volume is called The World’s Greatest Heroes.

Marvel-Verse: Morbius by Roy Thomas

Michael Morbius is one of the most tragic figures in all of the Marvel-Verse – transformed by his own hand into a living vampire! Watch him struggle against his bloodsucking impulses in astonishing adventures that blend super-heroics with horror! In Spider-Man’s first encounter with Morbius, our hero has his hands full…all six of them! Can Spidey tackle his vampiric new foe and old enemy the Lizard while ridding himself of four unwanted extra limbs?! Then, Morbius joins the Thing in a fight to avoid being wiped out by the Living Eraser! Michael is haunted by a ghost from his past – and compelled by a bond of blood! Plus: Vampire meets demons in a thriller featuring Spidey and Doctor Strange

A good jumping-off point for anyone looking to get into Morbius before Jared Leto’s Sony film comes out this month.

Gamma Flight by Al Ewing and Crystal Frasier

Go on the run with the outlaws of Gamma Flight in this action-packed addition to the IMMORTAL HULK mythos! They had one job: Find and stop the Hulk. But when push came to smash, Gamma Flight sided with the green goliath – and now the human world intends to make them regret it. Puck, Absorbing Man, Titania, Doc Sasquatch, Dr. Charlene McGowan and a horribly changed Rick Jones are fugitives from every known authority – but a team this full of gamma energy is bound to break before long. Especially when they learn who’s after them! And don’t miss the shocking revelations about Rick Jones, the Marvel Universe’s most beloved sidekick! You’ve been calling for them since IMMORTAL HULK’s early days – well, True Believer, we’re about to deliver!

I’d definitely recommend reading Al Ewing’s Immortal Hulk first, to get the context for this.

Black Cat Volume 6: Infinity Score by Jed MacKay

Felicia Hardy has been hired to steal the Infinity Stones! But has anyone told her that these stones are now people? Regardless, Nick Fury will do anything to stop the stone-bearers from being gathered – even if that means taking all nine of Felicia’s lives! The Black Cat has been picking away at the corners of the Marvel Universe, but this heist will put her square in the middle – just where she does not want to be! Brace yourselves for the cosmic caper of the century as Felicia Hardy dives headfirst into the Infinity Score!

The previous five volumes are called: Grand Theft Marvel, On The Run, All Dressed Up, Queen In Black and I’ll Take Manhatten.

Avengers Epic Collection: Judgement Day by Roger Stern and more

Roger Stern’s fan-favourite run comes to a celestial conclusion! For the life of Hercules, the Avengers must storm the very gates of Olympus and take on an entire pantheon of all-powerful Greek Gods! Do our heroes stand a snowball’s chance in Tartarus? Then, Magneto’s on trial, and he needs all the help he can get! The X-Men aren’t sure what his scheme is, but they’re positive they don’t want the Avengers and the Soviet Super-Soldiers to find out before they do! It’s three-way warfare as the world watches, with the Master of Magnetism’s freedom – and conscience – as the prize! Plus: Jarvis stands alone…and Doctor Doom conquers the world! Guest starring the West Coast Avengers!

Previous available volumes are: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Once An Avenger, Masters Of Evil, Behold… The Vision, This Beachhead Earth, A Traitor Stalks Within Us, The Avengers/Defenders War, Kang War, The Final Threat and Under Siege.

Avengers by Jason Aaron Volume 9: World War She-Hulk

World War She-Hulk! The planet has become more fractured and volatile than ever – especially for the Avengers. And when She-Hulk is declared a global menace, Russia’s mightiest heroes, the Winter Guard, are tasked with bringing her to justice! Now, Jen Walters will face a fate that not even a Hulk could hope to endure. The Red Room is the secret furnace where some of the world’s greatest assassins and super-killers have been forged – and it will transform Jen into something terrifying. The Winter Hulk is about to be unleashed on the world – including a dark and bloody mission beneath the waves in Atlantis! And the only one who may be able to stop her is…Gorilla-Man? No matter who wins, She-Hulk and the Avengers will be changed forever!

Previous volumes are: The Final Host, World Tour, War Of The Vampires, No Road Home, War Of The Realms, Challenge Of The Ghost Riders, Starbrand Reborn, The Age Of Khonshu, Enter The Phoenix, Heroes Reborn: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Heroes Reborn: America’s Mightiest Heroes Companion volumes 1 and 2. Of course, there will also be a Heroes Reborn reading guide coming soon, to explain how it all works together.

And that’s everything coming out this week – what’s on your pull list? I’m eyeing up the Ultimate Spider-Man Omnibus!
