8th December Marvel Comic Releases

There’s a bumper crop of new releases coming out this week, so let’s get down to it!

Single Issues:

Captain America Iron Man by Derek Landy

A government agent turned Hydra provocateur stages a daring breakout on her way to prison, attracting the attention of both Iron Man and Captain America. When Steve and Tony realize they both have a connection to the slippery fugitive, they team up to track her down-only to discover she’s not the only player on the board with big plans and sinister motives…

One of my most anticipated releases of the year, as I’m a massive fan of Derek Landy’s books, and his Falcon And The Winter Soldier series from last year! Personally, I’d recommend being reasonably up to date with Steve Rogers and Tony Stark in comic continuity, and having a read of said Falcon And The Winter Soldier series before going into this, just in case.

Death Of Doctor Strange: Blade by Danny Lore

A long time ago, Doctor Strange destroyed every vampire in the world with one spell, including Dracula. Now, with Strange dead, Dracula’s Vampire Nation celebrates!
That doesn’t sit too well with Strange’s old friend, and new Vampire Nation sheriff, Blade the Vampire Hunter! But what happens when interlopers from another dimension invade the vamp’s territory and put all the bloodsuckers’ lives at risk? Will Blade do his duty to protect them? Or will he help make sure the vamps stay wiped out this time?

Make sure you’re up to date with Death Of Doctor Strange, and Blade, before buying this!

Demon Days: X-Men Creators Cut by Peach Momoko

A Marvel story unlike any you’ve ever seen before-now presented in bold black and white! This special edition of Stormbreaker Peach Momoko’s revolutionary reimagination of the Marvel Universe also includes layouts, pencils, character designs and unused art!

If you were a fan of Demon Days from earlier this year, this will be a fantastic read for you!

Devil’s Reign by Chip Zdarsky

The story that’s been building for years is here! Wilson Fisk went from Kingpin to Mayor of the biggest city in America and is going to bring his full criminal and political power to bear on the super heroes who call NYC home. The man who once destroyed Daredevil has set his sights on The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and more. And since it’s Fisk, once he takes them all down, you know he’s going to sign it.
CROSSBONES! TASKMASTER! TYPHOID MARY! SHOCKER! WHIPLASH! RHINO! KRAVEN! Fisk has an ARMY of super villains at his command – and this is just his opening salvo. For years, Fisk has waited for his time to strike, and YOU WON’T BELIEVE the aces he’s got up his sleeves!

Definitely not one for newbies, I’d definitely make sure I was up to date with all of the characters mentioned before even considering touching this. Hopefully though, if my predictions about Hawkeye‘s Echo are correct, I should have a guide up for Fisk himself this Wednesday!

Giant Size Black Cat: Infinity Score by Jed MacKay

This is it, the grand climax to INFINITE DESTINIES and INFINITY SCORE and the totality of BLACK CAT from the past two years, all in this oversize special!
•  Black Cat has brought half of the Infinity Stones together, collecting a level of power that hasn’t been seen in years! But to what end?
•  This hasn’t taken her out of the crosshairs of Nick Fury OR Nighthawk and with the Infinity Stones involved, can Thanos be far behind?!

Another wrap up of several big storylines, so make sure you’ve read Infinite Destines, Infinity Score and Black Cat first.

Marvel Voices: Community by Daniel Jose Older and more

Spider-Man! White Tiger! Ghost Rider! And so many more heroes get their moment in the sun as new and fan-favorite creators continue to expand the world outside your window in MARVEL’S VOICES: COMUNIDADES (Community)! Featuring an introduction by renowned scholar Frederick Luis Aldama! PLUS, an all-new hero takes the stage in a whirlwind adventure you won’t want to miss.

As this is a Marvel Voices collection, I’d just make sure you know about the characters mentioned.

Bind Ups:

Beta Ray Bill: Argent Star by Daniel Warren Johnson

The second-most famous wielder of Mjolnir! Beta Ray Bill is tired of life in Thor’s shadow – and with Bill’s own mighty hammer, Stormbreaker, recently destroyed at the thunder god’s hands, Bill finds himself at a crossroads. The Korbinite must strike out in search of his destiny – assuming he can first defeat a Knullified Fin Fang Foom! Bill begins a hunt for Odin in hopes of resurrecting his golden weapon – but Stormbreaker is never coming back. Nonetheless, there is one place where Beta Ray Bill could restore his full powers. The All-Father of Nothing offers the Korbinite a path to immortality – but at a price not even a god can afford! Who will join Bill on a dangerous and deadly cosmic quest?

You’ll need to read Thor by Donny Cates and King In Black before going into this.

Daredevil by Charles Soule Omnibus

Charles Soule joins the pantheon of legendary writers who have put Daredevil through hell! Soule and visionary artist Ron Garney bring DD back to the Kitchen with a fresh new look – but the Man Without Fear has his hands full with crime lord Tenfingers…and a new protégé, Blindspot! Elektra has a score to settle, the Punisher takes aim at a client, deadly serial killer Muse paints the town bloodred and Matt Murdock’s secrets are about to come back to bite him in a huge way. He has a plan – and he’ll take it all the way to the Supreme Court! But will Daredevil’s world be brought crashing down when Wilson Fisk becomes the mayor of New York City?

This is set after Secret Wars, so make sure you’re caught up there.

Fantastic Four: Hate Of Four by Chip Zdarsky

With their family torn apart, the Thing and the Human Torch are the Fantastic Two! The world mourns Reed and Sue Richards, missing and presumed dead. Meanwhile, something is wrong with Johnny Storm, and only Ben Grimm can help him! But what monumental secret has Doctor Doom been hiding – and how will it completely change Ben and Johnny’s lives?! Things go multiversal as the Thing and the Torch look for answers to their family tragedy on other worlds – but they’ll end up powerless and lost, fighting to survive in a savage wasteland! The Thing allies himself with an old enemy in brand-new armor – and get ready for the two-in-one team-up that everybody has been waiting for! But will Ben and Johnny discover the true fate of the Four?

This appears to be set after Secret Wars, but don’t quote me on that, as I can’t find any definitive answers. All I know is that this is set after Reed and Sue have ‘died,’ leaving behind Johnny and Ben.

Immortal Hulk volume 10: Hell And Death by Al Ewing

The gamma monsters are back – converging, one by one, on New York City. Who can stop them now? Who can save us…from the immortal Hulk? The Avengers will give it their best shot – but last time, they destroyed an entire town while fighting the Hulk. Now they’re in the middle of New York, about to take on a very different kind of monster… and it’s become personal. In the wake of this earth-shattering confrontation, a shaken Hulk will turn to the one person who always understood him. It’s finally time for truths to be told, but will it be Betty Banner who tells them…or the Red Harpy? And how will they affect the eternal life of the immortal Hulk?! Al Ewing and Joe Bennett’s acclaimed run reaches its horrific end! Abandon hope, all ye who enter here!

This is volume 10, the previous nine are called: Or Is He Both?, The Green Door, Hulk In Hell, Abomination, Breaker Of Worlds, We Believe In Bruce Banner, Hulk Is Hulk, The Keeper Of The Door and The Weakest One there Is.

Jessica Jones: Alias Omnibus by Brian Michael Bendis

Meet Jessica Jones. Once upon a time, she was a costumed super hero – but not a very good one. Now a chain-smoking, self-destructive alcoholic, Jessica is the owner and sole employee of Alias Investigations, specializing in superhuman cases. But when she uncovers a hero’s true identity, Jessica becomes the target of a far-reaching conspiracy. Can her sardonic wit, charm and intelligence help her survive? Or has she burned too many bridges to turn to old friends for help? Plus: Jessica investigates the disappearance of a girl rumored to be a mutant, pursues an awkward relationship with Luke Cage and teams up with Jessica Drew to investigate a drug that grants super-powers! But when a nightmare returns, can Jessica find the inner strength to defeat the demons of her past?

This is the Jessica Jones comic series which sparked off the Jessica Jones tv show on Netflix! I read the first volume and was absolutely fine without reading anything else Jessica related, so you should be too.

Reptil: Brink Of Extinction by Terry Blas and CHristos Gage

Reptil – the dinosaur-powered graduate of Avengers Academy – is on the brink of extinction! In the wake of his grandfather’s worsening health, Humberto
Lopez has taken a step back from crimefighting to focus on his family. Perhaps it’s a sign that he should give up on becoming a hero and finally come to terms
with his parents’ mysterious disappearance…or perhaps not! When a mysterious figure ambushes Humberto, what unravels will shake the core of everything
that Reptil thought he knew about his past. And it will either change the course of his future – or end it forever! Plus: Relive Humberto’s sensational debut!
When Stegron the Dinosaur Man launches a campaign of destruction across America, the Avengers Initiative needs a new recruit – and Reptil is just the hero
for the job!

This is the first appearance of Reptil, so you’ll be fine reading this without any prior knowledge.

Silk: Out Of The Spider-Verse volume 3 by Robbie Thompson

Silk’s turbulent life has been turned upside down yet again! What’s a young super hero to do? Probably not commit more robberies while undercover with the Black Cat’s crew! Because when Silk’s luck runs out and Felicia learns the truth about her seeming ally, that idea will definitely end in tears! Then, Cindy finds herself haunted by Spectro! Who is this spooky figure, and will he be a friendly ghost? Silk heads into the Negative Zone – then gets drawn into a Clone Conspiracy! And with a variety of folks mysteriously dead no more, she’s about to face a Spider-Woman who’s come back from the grave! If Cindy can survive all of that, then Mockingbird may have an interesting proposition for her. Is the world ready for…Silk, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.?!

This is volume 3, so make sure you have the first two volumes, which are just numbered, instead of having subtitles.

X-Men: From The Ashes by Chris Claremont

Is the Phoenix rising again? Chris Claremont and Paul Smith’s classic UNCANNY X-MEN
arc puts the team through major changes – and a test of faith! It’s the start of a beautiful
friendship between Kitty Pryde and Lockheed, but why does Kitty think Professor Xavier
is a jerk? Storm battles Callisto, leader of the outcast mutant Morlocks – but why is
Storm so unsettled, and what will she do to resolve her inner conflicts? Meanwhile,
Rogue joins the X-Men, but how will the team react to the addition of their former foe?
Wolverine and Mariko Yashida are engaged – but surprises await the X-Men in Japan!
And Cyclops has a new love in Madelyne Pryor…but clues that Dark Phoenix is
returning begin to point heartbreakingly close to home! Experience one of the
X-Men’s most beloved storylines!

I’d read Claremont’s previous Uncanny X-Men before this. At the very least, I’d check out Dark Phoenix Saga.

X-Men: Inferno Prologue Omnibus by Louise Simonson and more

The X-Men are dead! At least that’s what the world thinks – but Marvel’s mightiest mutants are secretly alive and well in the Australian Outback! How long will the X-Men’s self-imposed exile last when the Brood and the mutant-exploiting nation of Genosha come calling? Meanwhile, the New Mutants battle Freedom Force as they deal with Doug Ramsey’s shocking death, and X-Factor befriends Apocalypse’s Celestial ship and faces Infectia! But as all three teams fight the Evolutionary War, Limbo’s demons begin to pursue a sinister agenda…on Earth! A spark has been lit – and if the X-Men aren’t careful, the flames will fan into an all-out inferno!

Again, I’d make sure you’ve read at least a bit of previous X-Men runs, just so you know why they’re in the Outback and what the Brood is!

And that’s everything coming out this new comic book day! What’s on your pull list? I’ve got my eye on Devil’s Reign and Marvel Voices!
