1st September Marvel Comic Releases

It’s a new month, so it’s time to talk about this week’s new comic releases!

Single Issues:

Last Annihilation: Wiccan and Hulking by Anthony Oliveira

WORLDS APART, BUT NEVER ALONE!
The Last Annihilation has hit the Kree/Skrull Alliance. Wiccan and Hulkling must split up to simultaneously defend two planets against the Mindless Army! But will the individual newlyweds be enough to fight off the forces of Dormammu? Or will they become the next casualties in this senseless war?

I’d definitely say read Last Annihilation before going near this, along with the Empyre event, so you know what Wiccan and Hulking have been up to recently.

Demon Days: Cursed Web by Peach Momoko

SPIDERS AND WOLVES AND YOKAI… OH MY!
Mariko Yashida journeys deep into a dark forest to find answers about her past. Instead, she finds a magical wolf with three toes and a strange girl with a pet spider. But there are deadly creatures in these woods too – a mysterious, blue-skinned woman and a giant with super-strength and claws – and they’re after Mariko! Don’t miss this epic tale, straight from the creative mind of STORMBREAKER PEACH MOMOKO! Book THREE of FIVE of the DEMON DAYS saga!

As the synopsis says, this is part three of five in the Demon Days saga, the first two are Demon Days: X-Men and Demon Days: Mariko.

Dark Days by Tom Taylor

This is what the Watcher has been watching for!
•  A danger older than the Earth threatens everything. For once, the heroes who have saved the planet so many times are almost powerless in the face of it.
•  X-Men and Avengers assemble. Spider-People and Fantastic Four come together. Heroes for Hire fight alongside Champions.
•  None of it will be enough.
•  The lights are about to go out.
•  The world outside our window…is about to end.
•  An all-new saga of the Marvel Universe as you’ve never seen it before from Tom Taylor and Iban Coello!

The start of a new limited series, which affects every part of the Marvel Universe. If you’re a fan of The Watcher, this is definitely one for you!

Bind Ups:

Wolverine Volume 2 by Benjamin Percy

Bodies have been dropped, and priceless artifacts stolen. Who is making moves against Logan’s old crew, Team X? The answers lie in Madripoor, which means this is a job for Patch! But at an underworld criminal auction specializing in super hero artifacts, Logan will find that the next lot up for sale is his old ally Maverick! Together, can they fight their way to freedom? And how will Maverick react to the prospect of a fresh start on Krakoa? Then, it’s claws against fangs as Wolverine braves the vampire nation in a quest to stop Dracula’s plot to co-opt his mutant healing factor! But what sacrifices and moral compromises must be made? Prepare for a betrayal that will tear through the X-books!

The next part in Wolverine’s Dawn Of X saga, the guide to Dawn Of X Part One is right here, and Part Two is coming soon!

What Of Original Marvel Series volume 1 by Roy Thomas and more

What if the Marvel Universe was not as you know it? Infinite realities offer infinite possibilities for classic creators to unleash their wildest imaginations – and ponder: What if Spider-Man joined the Fantastic Four? Or Captain America rescued Bucky in World War II? Or Doctor Doom became a hero? The FF get different powers! Other people get Spidey’s powers! Jane Foster finds the hammer of Thor! The Avengers assemble in the 1950s! Jack Kirby bombards the Marvel Bullpen with cosmic rays, Conan walks the modern day Earth and Doctor Strange becomes a disciple of Dormammu! Peter Parker stops the burglar who killed Uncle Ben, the Hulk keeps Bruce Banner’s intellect, the Invaders fight on after World War II and the Invisible Girl marries Namor – plus more thought-provoking tales that make you ask: What If?

Collecting some of the original What If comics!

Heroes Reborn: America’s Mightiest Heroes Companion volume 1 by Ryan Cady and more

Stories from a world without Avengers! The teenage Hyperion and his friends in the Shi’ar Imperial Guard find horror and agony in the Negative Zone! Peter Parker is the world’s biggest Hyperion fan – and he also just happens to be chummy with his favorite hero thanks to a photography gig at the Daily Bugle! Years after his kind were massacred, Magneto gathers his Mutant Force for a deadly rescue mission! Kid Spectrum (Sam Alexander), Girl Power (Kamala Khan) and the all-new Falcon (Miles Morales) are the Young Squadron! And Baron Zemo leads Natasha Romanov, Clint Barton, Scott Lang and Victor Creed in an assault on Earth’s supreme heroes!

Part of the Heroes Reborn event, so I’d recommend reading at least the main Heroes Reborn comic first. I’ll have a guide going up soon to the series, for anyone who’s interested.

Heroes Reborn: America’s Mightiest Hero Companion volume 2

More tales from a world reborn! In the absence of the Avengers, the Squadron Supreme are America’s Mightiest Heroes – and the changes don’t end there! Some threats require a more savage approach than the Squadron can offer, and that’s where Elektra and her squad – including the Punisher, Crossbones and Cloak – come in! Police Commissioner Luke Cage has one job: eliminate vigilantes! By day, Dr. Gwendolyn Stacy is Ravencroft Asylum’s leading psychiatrist – but by night, she dons the guise of Nightbird! Who will protect Canada from the supremacy of the Squadron? Weapon X and Final Flight! And don’t miss a classic story from the days of yore: Nighthawk vs. the Green Goblin on the night Sam Wilson died!

Part two to the Heroes Reborn Companion above, I’d recommend reading these together.

Thor and Loki: Double Trouble by Mariko Tamaki

They’re brothers, gods and sons of Odin – but Thor and Loki just don’t get along! Especially since Loki keeps tricking Thor into doing things that will get him in trouble. Even so, when Loki dares Thor to steal a powerful relic from Odin’s vault, how can the God of Thunder say nay? As Loki summons a serpent set on city-smashing, Thor has to clean up his mess…again! But when the feuding siblings are transported to an alternate universe, they meet a very different Thor: Jane Foster! Can the Goddess of Thunder help these misbehaving brothers find their way home? Mariko Tamaki and Gurihiru – the fan-favourite team that brought you SPIDER-MAN & VENOM: DOUBLE TROUBLE – return to unleash anarchy in Asgard!

Perfect for any young fans wanting to get into comics!

Doctor Strange Epic Collection: Vampiric Verses by Roy Thomas

The return of the vampires! Doctor Strange once wiped bloodsuckers from the face of the Earth – but now they rise again, beginning with one very close to Stephen! Brother Voodoo has the answer for the problem: zombies?! And what is Zom – besides big trouble in a tiny form? Dormammu unleashes his Mindless Ones on New York City, captures Clea and renders Doctor Strange powerless! Does this mean Baron Mordo will be the new Sorcerer Supreme? A possessed Topaz needs help finding the special ingredients to exorcise her demon, and her shopping list includes the fur of Werewolf by Night and the flame of Ghost Rider! And as Thanos exerts his grip on the Marvel Universe, Strange plays a crucial role in the Infinity Gauntlet saga!

Part nine in the Doctor Strange Epic Collection, the previous volumes are: Master Of The Mystic Arts, A Separate Reality, Alone Against Eternity, The Reality War and Triumph And Torment. Like always, there are volumes missing in the series, but hopefully they will be filled in soon.

Black Cat volume 5: I’ll Take Manhattan by Jed MacKay

The cat’s out of the bag! The Black Fox has sent Felicia Hardy and her crew to steal items from across the Marvel Universe. But why? At long last, the Fox’s complicated scheme is revealed! But once the Black Cat and her team have completed this multifaceted heist, what will it mean for their standing in NYC? For one thing, Spider-Man is definitely not okay with what she’s done! As Felicia weighs her actions over the last few years, the price of everything she has stolen is finally tallied – and the bill falls due. Is this the end of an era? Plus: cosmic capers await when the Black Cat crosses paths with an Infinity Stone – and the South Korean sensations White Fox, Taegukgi and Tiger Division!

The previous volumes in this series are: Grand Theft Marvel, On The Run, All Dressed Up and Queen In Black.

Captain America volume 5: All Die Young Part Two by Ta-Nehisi Coates

One last showdown! Captain America has been framed for murder, imprisoned and then made a fugitive – his reputation smeared and his spirit tested – all at the shadowy hands of the manipulative Power Elite. Now, Cap will take his fight straight to the Power Elite. But his greatest enemy awaits, reborn deadlier than ever: the Red Skull! Prepare for an all-out fight to the finish and a climactic conclusion to the saga that has tested the ethics and ideals of the man who embodies America like no other! Acclaimed writer Ta-Nehisi Coates concludes his extraordinary exploration of Steve Rogers – the man, the myth, the living legend that is Captain America!

The previous volumes are: Winter In America, Captain Of Nothing, The Legend Of Steve and All Die Young Part One.

Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus volume 5 by Gerry Conway

Spider-Man’s amazingly popular omnibus line continues with the storyline that shocked the comics world: Peter Parker’s deceased beloved, Gwen Stacy, shows up on his doorstep – kicking off a mind-bending clone saga that would last for decades! The scheming Jackal lines up a murderers’ row of foes to take on Spider-Man: Tarantula, Scorpion and Spidey himself! The Punisher sets his sights on Spidey in an adventure guest-starring the X-Men’s Nightcrawler! J. Jonah Jameson finally gets the goods on Spider-Man’s secret identity! Doc Ock, Hammerhead, Kingpin and the Molten Man are on hand to menace Spidey, but it’s not all bad guys for our hero – as romance blooms between Peter and Mary Jane, and Nova teams up with Spider-Man!

The previous volumes are all numbered with no names, so you’ll just want volumes 1-4.

Eternals volume 1: Only Death Is Eternal by Kieron Gillen

Never die…never win. What’s the point of an eternal battle? For millions of years, one hundred Eternals have roamed the Earth, secret protectors of
humanity. Without them, mankind would be smears between the teeth of the demon-like Deviants. Their war has waged for all time, echoing in our myths and nightmares. But today, the Eternals face something new: change! Can they – or anyone on Earth – survive their discovery? An Eternal has been murdered by one of their own, and this may not be the last such killing. But Sersi’s number one suspect is…Thena?! Plus: Titans clash in a city driven mad as Ikaris battles Thanos! From the thought-provoking minds of Kieron Gillen (YOUNG AVENGERS, UNCANNY X-MEN) and Esad Ribic (THOR: GOD OF THUNDER, SECRET WARS) comes a new vision of the classic Marvel mythology!

I reckon you can probably read this without much previous knowledge, though I would recommend checking out at least Neil Gaiman’s Eternals first, just so you have a basis for the characters and their powers first.

Marauders by Gerry Conway volume 1

Ahoy, muties – the X-Men sail at dawn! A glorious new mutant era has begun on Krakoa, but some nations are preventing mutants from escaping to their promised homeland. Which is where Captain Kate Pryde and her seafaring allies come in! Funded by Emma Frost and the Hellfire Trading Company, Kate and her crew of Storm, Pyro, Bishop and Iceman sail the seven seas as the Marauders, rescuing mutants in need! But the real cutthroats are back home in the Hellfire Club’s Inner Circle, where Sebastian Shaw has recruited a new Black Bishop to aid in his machinations against the Club’s two queens. A life on the ocean waves involves clashes with the anti-mutant Verendi, the size-changing pest Yellowjacket and more! But when tragedy strikes the Marauders, Krakoa will be left reeling from an unthinkable – and perhaps insurmountable – death!

A huge bind up for the first 12 issues of the Marauders, which is part of the Dawn Of X series.

Marvel Masterworks Team Up volume 6 by Chris Claremont

At the same time as they were making history on X-MEN, Chris Claremont and John Byrne were pairing Spider-Man with some of the coolest and catchiest characters in the Marvel firmament! But first, this volume opens with one of the earliest appearances of the all-new, all-different X-Men revival in the very first MARVEL TEAM-UP ANNUAL, by Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema! Mantlo concludes his sterling run with a Byrne-drawn two-parter as Spidey and the Hulk square off against Woodgod – whose rare first appearance is also included in this volume! And when Byrne links up with Claremont, the duo begins a white-hot run that teams Spidey with Yellowjacket, the Wasp, the Human Torch, Iron Fist and the Daughters of the Dragon!

This is volume 6, so you’ll want volumes 1-5 first. There’s no specific title for each volume for this series.

Amazing Spider-Man volume 14: Chameleon Conspiracy by Nick Spencer

One of Spider-Man’s deadliest and most deceptive enemies returns! The master of disguise known as the Chameleon is about to make the biggest play of his villainous career – and to get to the bottom of this conspiracy, Spidey will need to team up with his super-spy sister, Teresa! But with two sets of Parker luck working against them, will they stand a chance against the anarchic alliance the Chameleon has formed with the Foreigner, Chance and Jack O’ Lantern? Prepare for an unpredictable, revelatory tale that fans of the web-slinger dare not miss as Nick Spencer’s high-octane saga takes its next dramatic twist!

The previous volumes are called: Back To Basics, Friends And Foes, Lifetime Achievement, Hunted, Behind The Scenes, Absolute Carnage, 2099, 2099 Companion, Threats And Menaces, Sins Rising, Green Goblin Returns, Last Remains, Last Remains Companion, Shattered Web and Kings Ransom.

And that’s everything coming out for this week’s new comic book day! What’s on your pull list? I’ve got my eye on the Heroes Reborn Companions and the Eternals!
