4th August Marvel Comic Releases

This New Comic Book Day is giving us a bumper crop of new releases, let’s get right into it!

Single Issues

Deadpool Black White Blood by Tom Taylor and others

LIKE A CLASSIC BLACK & WHITE MOVIE, BUT WITH WAY MORE BLOOD!
What’s black, white, and red all over? Three blood-drenched tales of violence and mayhem led by Marvel’s Mirthful Mercenary himself, Deadpool! You want to see today’s top talent take it to the hilt to bring you the wildest Wade Wilson adventures yet?! This is the book for you! It’s as plain as black and white. And red.

While this is a mini-series, so it doesn’t particularly tie into anything specific, I would recommend reading Tom Taylor’s Wolverine, as Gabby Kinney makes an appearance here!

Extreme Carnage: Lasher by Clay McLeod Chapman

WITNESS THE BIRTH OF A NEW SYMBIOTE!
Four issues into the Carnage event of the summer and the bodies just keep piling up – including some of the Venomaniacs the Mighty Marveldom know and love! But now is not a time to mourn for fallen heroes (or their symbiotes). CARNAGE is on the loose, and he’s building an army…

The next part in the Extreme Carnage event, set after King In Black. To read this, I’d recommend starting here, and then working through Extreme Carnage and King In Black.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Annual by Al Ewing and Jed MacKay

Hercules has always been known as the Prince of Power…that is until a younger prince showed up to out-muscle him! With the aid of an all-powerful Infinity Stone, even a complete idiot can develop the quads, delts and abs of a Prince of Power…but why was it THIS idiot? Focus on your core, True Believers – the answers will shock you to it!

The next part of the latest Infinity Stone based storyline, the previous issues are Iron Man Annual 1, Captain America Annual 1 and Thor Annual 1.

Miles Morales: Marvel Tales by Brian Michael Bendis

A 21st-century sensation swings his way into superstardom as we celebrate the legacy of the House of Ideas with MARVEL TALES! This anthology series shines a spotlight on fan-favourite characters, features timeless stories and highlights some of Marvel’s most impressive talent from the past eight decades! And when the Peter Parker of the Ultimate Universe falls, young Miles Morales steps up as his world’s new Spider-Man! From the brilliant creative pairing of Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli comes a web-slinger for the modern era – but who is Miles? How did he get his powers? What deadly dangers will he face? And how will he live up to Peter’s legacy?

Sadly, this doesn’t mark the return of Brian Michael Bendis to Marvel, but this is a great place to start reading Miles Morales comics! The day I’m posting this is Spider-Man day, after all!

Spirits Of Vengeance: Spirit Rider by B. Earl and Taboo

SHE’S LIKE NO GHOST RIDER YOU’VE EVER SEEN!
SHE IS KUSHALA – A SORCERER SUPREME, A SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE…AND THE SAVIOUR OF JOHNNY BLAZE’S SOUL!
Blaze has been through a lot lately, from ascending the throne of Hell to nearly murdering his former allies on the Avengers. But his nightmare is far from over. Something – or someone – is haunting him, and only a Ghost Rider with the powers of a Sorcerer Supreme can find out why. The dynamic writing duo of Taboo (of the Black Eyed Peas) and B. Earl expand the Rider mythos with an action-packed special that will kick off a brand-new era of vengeance! Kushala’s about to be the hottest thing in hell.

Kushala’s first appearance was in Robbie Thompson’s Doctor Strange And The Sorcerer’s Supreme, I’d also recommend going through Ghost Rider’s latest adventures from Ed Brisson.

Bind Ups:

Captain America by Jurgens Omnibus by Dan Jurgens and more

Comic book titan Dan Jurgens’ complete CAPTAIN AMERICA run! In action-packed adventures, Cap must somehow stop the war efforts of the Hate-Monger, a villain with ties to Hitler himself – and save Ka-Zar from the monstrous murderer Count Nefaria! But when Steve Rogers comes face-to-face with Protocide, he learns that everything he knew about his origin is wrong! And what happens when Steve’s girlfriend, Connie Ferrari, gets caught in an A.I.M. plot? Then, the entire free world is at stake when the nefarious Red Skull hijacks the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier and threatens nuclear annihilation. The only one that can stop this diabolical plan is the Sentinel of Liberty. There’s just one problem: Captain America is…dead?! Featuring Nick Fury, U.S.Agent, the Fantastic Four and the Howling Commandos!

Exactly as it says on the tin – the entire 1998 Dan Jurgens run on Captain America!

Curse Of Man-Thing by Steve Orlando

Celebrating fifty years of strange and thought-provoking storytelling! The macabre Man-Thing rises from his swamp and returns to centre stage! Overnight, vegetative pillars arise across the world. Atop them sit ominous bulbs, growing ever more repulsive. As the sun beats down, the bulbs swell, threatening to burst – and all who come into contact with them will burn! The signature curse of the Man-Thing has gone global! NEW VILLAIN HARROWER is trying to scorch humanity from the face of the planet – and when she discovers the Nexus of All Realities, her twisted mission becomes all the more apocalyptic! Unless Earth’s greatest heroes can somehow rejuvenate the Man-Thing and help him reclaim his power, the whole world will be made to know fear – and to burn at its touch!

Definitely one for people who are already fans of Man-Thing.

Excalibur by Tini Howard

Forging a new dawn! A fresh era begins for mutantkind – and for Betsy Braddock! When a portal opens between the X-Men’s new home, Krakoa, and the mystical Otherworld, magic and science collide – and Betsy stands transformed into the new Captain Britain! And she’s joined by allies Rogue, Gambit, Jubilee, Rictor…and Apocalypse! But what happens when mutantkind’s rise threatens Morgan Le Fay’s reign? And whose side will this new Excalibur take in the Otherworld war? Rogue faces an uncertain fate, Apocalypse performs a ritual and a throne of power changes hands! Plus: Excalibur faces an old foe – only this time they are the hunters, and the Warwolves are the game! Betsy is torn between Otherworld, Britain and Krakoa – and Apocalypse forges ahead toward his mysterious ultimate goal! The stage is set for X OF SWORDS!

Part of the Dawn Of X run, so if you’ve collected all the latest X-Men stories in Dawn Of X bind ups, then you don’t need to buy this! If you’re buying your run in teams, then you’ll need this. I’ll be doing a part two to my first guide soon, so you’ll know where this fits then!

Golden Age Captain America Omnibus by Stan Lee

Marvel celebrates the 80th anniversary of the legendary red, white and blue Super-Soldier Captain America with a second omnibus hardcover of vintage 1940s Timely tales! Across twelve giant-sized classics, Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes battle Axis invaders, fifth columnists, weird terrors, robotic menaces and the iconic super villain the Red Skull! The World War II-era action takes place both stateside and in the European and Pacific theaters of battle! Foes include the reanimated murderer Killer Kole, the lethal and lovely Queen Medusa, and Black Talon and Black Toad! Each 64-page issue is jam-packed with adventure, including superstar backups featuring Sub-Mariner and the Human Torch, and diamonds in the Golden Age rough like the Fighting Yank, Roddy Colt, “Headline” Hunter, the Secret Stamp and Stan Lee’s whimsical feature, “The Imp!”

The only thing you need before this is Golden Age Captain America Omnibus Volume 1.

Captain America Omnibus: Death Of Captain America by Ed Brubaker

The story that stunned readers, sent shockwaves through the Marvel Universe and made headlines worldwide! Captain America has been assassinated! And now Sharon Carter, Bucky Barnes, Falcon, Black Widow and Iron Man come together in a desperate attempt to keep Cap’s dream alive. But Steve Rogers’ death was merely the first step in the Red Skull’s wicked machinations. As the Skull’s true plan kicks into motion and chaos takes hold of the United States, only one man stands in its way – but is he up to the task? Only recently known as the Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes is called on to live up to the dream in ways he never imagined. Eisner Award-winning writer Ed Brubaker combines action, suspense and human drama in a saga that ties together all eras of the star-spangled Avenger’s history!

Not my favourite Captain America run, but it does bring Bucky in as Captain America – if you’re looking to read this, you’ll want to read at the very least Civil War.

New Mutants by Vita Ayala

On the edge of Krakoan society, the New Mutants let loose! Welcome to the Wild Hunt – going big, blowing things up and combining powers to see who can be crowned king of the mountain. But something lurks in the trees. Something old – and hungry. And its favourite prey is young mutants! As Karma and Dani delve deeper into their nightmares, a spider sets his eyes on the most vulnerable among the team. And as the Wild Hunt continues, someone vanishes without a trace, plans long in motion begin to unfurl and children who play at being adults must now prepare for the fight of their lives. With one among them lost in Otherworld, can the New Mutants find and extract their friend without losing themselves in the process?

Another volume in the current X-Men run, so again, if you’re collecting Dawn Of X, you don’t need this, if you’re going through by individual teams, then you’ll need the previous volumes: New Mutants by Jonathan Hickman, New Mutants by Ed Brisson and X Of Swords by Jonathan Hickman.

Hellions by Zeb Wells volume 2

Mister Sinister’s team of Hellions is dead! When they’re restored on Krakoa, why do they feel a bit – different? And what is Sinister really up to? The resurrected Hellions are tasked with retrieving Nanny’s ship and creating new containment armour for the deadly Orphan-Maker. But the emergence of an old enemy and his fearsome warriors will make the Hellions’ new lives a hell on Earth! And when Sinister vanishes, will the team be able to put aside the tensions that are splitting them apart and unravel the mystery? Plus: The Hellions find themselves at the mercy of Arcade’s new, psychological Murderworld! Empath’s past deeds come back to haunt him! And Psylocke takes on Betsy Braddock in a battle decades in the making! But who invited the Hellions to the Hellfire Gala?!

Another part of Dawn Of X, so same rules apply. Just make sure that before you read this, you’ve got volume 1, which is simply called Hellions by Zeb Wells volume 1.

New Mutants Epic Collection: Sudden Death by Louise Simonson

Tragedy strikes the New Mutants! Meet Bird-Brain, a bizarre creature who’s about to become the team’s feathered friend. The New Mutants face off against their rivals, the Hellions, to track Bird-Brain down – but before the quest is done, one of them will switch sides! And there’s worse in store for the team as they trace Bird-Brain’s origins back to the freak-filled island of the Ani-Mator. Between Ani-Mator’s weird science and the armoured killers of the Right, one of the New Mutants will not return home! Shattered by grief, guilt and loss, how can the team possibly move forward? The New Mutants clash with Freedom Force, and the alluring alien Gosamyr draws the team into an outer space adventure. But as Illyana’s rage grows, there’s trouble brewing in Limbo.

The previous volumes are called: Renewal and The Demon Bear Saga, annoyingly, this is skipping volumes 3 and 4, which seem to have not been released yet.

Amazing Spider-Man Michelinie and McFarlane Omnibus by David Michelinie and Todd McFarlane

Whether clad in classic blue-and-red or thrilling black, whether possessing spider-powers or cosmic might, Spider-Man stands ready to face any threat! And as David Michelinie and Todd McFarlane take the creative reins, the threats to Spidey have never been greater! From the introduction of the lethal Venom to the return of old enemies like Mysterio, the Scorpion and more to facing newcomers to his friendly neighborhood like Sabretooth, the Taskmaster, Magneto and the Sentinels, Spidey sure has his plate full! Good thing he has Mary Jane, Captain America, the Black Cat and the Hulk around to lend a hand!

You should be fine to read this if you’re new to Spider-Man.

Wolverine Omnibus volume 2 by Peter David

The best there is, by some of comics’ greatest talents! On the cutthroat island of Madripoor, Wolverine and Jessica Drew take on an evil cult that plans to raise an ancient demon with the mystical Gehenna Stone! An old friend’s death leads Logan to Nick Fury, but what is the surprising secret under the new Scorpio’s mask? Wolverine battles an unexpected foe in the jungles of the Savage Land – but when he follows a trail of tainted cocaine to Central America, can a young revolutionary help a sick and infected Logan survive against Tiger Shark? And what is the Lazarus Project? Plus: Wolverine crosses paths with Spider-Man, the Hulk, Ghost Rider and more!

Make sure you read Wolverine Omnibus Volume 1 by Peter David before reading this.

Wolverine Black White And Blood Treasury Edition by Gerry Duggan and more

The best there is by the best there are! Legendary creators, modern superstars, rising talents and fresh voices unite to tell savage tales of your favourite X-Man – in brutal black and white, with a liberal splash of blood red! Logan. Weapon X. Patch. Wolverine. He’s gone by many names and lived many different lives. Now, this exploration of his storied history takes you from Japan to Madripoor to the Savage Land – from a revelatory return to the Weapon X Program to a high-stakes mission with X-Force! Logan is joined by old allies like Kate Pryde and Nick Fury and heads into bloody battle against foes familiar and surprising – including Arcade, the Reavers, Cosmic Ghost Rider and, the deadliest of all, Sabretooth! It’s black, white and blood all over – on the larger-than-life pages of a Treasury Edition!

A special edition of the Wolverine Black White And Blood mini series that was released earlier this year.

Maestro: War And Pax by Peter David

Call him the Maestro! In a broken future, the man once known as the Hulk is now neither man nor Hulk. After deposing Dystopia’s ancient ruler, the Maestro sets his sights even higher. It’s time everyone left on the ravaged planet Earth recognised their one true god! But the Maestro isn’t the only would-be immortal left – and if he wants to truly dominate the globe, he’ll have to face the most powerful beings left in creation. The Pantheon sees all – including a Hulk too powerful to leave alive! And just when his former allies have him on the ropes, the Maestro’s true enemy shows his face at last – and nobody’s going to like the future he has planned! Peter David continues the tale he began decades ago in the legendary HULK: FUTURE IMPERFECT!

Definitely read Peter David’s Maestro comic first!

And that’s everything releasing this week! What’s on your pull list? For me, I’m definitely looking into that Wolverine Black White And Blood Treasury Edition!
