August 12th Marvel Comic Releases

It’s New Comic Book Day, let’s get on with the new releases!

This week is entirely new bind ups, as all the new single issues are continuations of already-running series’ so it’s going to be quick!

Captain Marvel: The Many Lives Of Carol Danvers by Roy Thomas

She has one of comics’ most richly varied careers – both in and out of costume! Carol Danvers has been a U.S. Air Force pilot, an undercover agent and a NASA security chief – but after meeting Kree warrior Mar-Vell, she gained incredible powers of her own, becoming Ms. Marvel! She soon joined the Avengers but later took to outer space as the cosmic Binary! Years later, a new name – Warbird – accompanied Carol’s return to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and her later position as a government-appointed agent. But at last, Carol Danvers has embraced her legacy – and now flies higher and faster as Captain Marvel!

This is going to be perfect for those of us who fell in love with Captain Marvel on film, but don’t know much about her comic counterpart. I certainly can’t wait to check it out!

Captain America: Heroes Reborn by Rob Liefeld

In 1996, the hottest creators of the day teamed up to reimagine and reinvigorate Marvel’s greatest heroes. The Avengers and Fantastic Four were reborn with bold new looks on a brave new world, their origins re-envisioned with a raw vitality and contemporary sensibility! Steve Rogers seems to have found the life of his dreams – but when the Red Skull returns, can Captain America reawaken to protect a whole new generation? Cap must stave off a nuclear nightmare with the help of Nick Fury, the Falcon – and Rikki Barnes, the spectacular all-new Bucky! But can Cap face the truth of his past and stand up to the insidious Sons of the Serpent? Guest-starring the mighty Avengers!

This sounds like an interesting one – I generally enjoy reimagined hero stories, and this sounds like a fun story about Cap and the Red Skull. I will say though, you will probably need prior knowledge of Sons Of Serpent and The Red Skull, but, seeing as this is a rebirth for Cap, it may be good place to start. Maybe just do a little bit of research into the characters first, just in case!

Helstrom Evil Origins by Gary Friedrich

From hell he came! Exorcist Daimon Hellstrom has a secret: By night, he is the Son of Satan! Golden trident in hand and pentagram on his chest, Hellstrom is out to confront his evil father – but will he make the scene in time to save Johnny Blaze, the flaming-skulled Ghost Rider? Experience Hellstrom’s early exploits – including his uncanny origin, his demonic battles against Satan himself and even his first clash with his sister, the succubus called Satana! Plus: As Hellstrom finds a place for himself on Marvel’s wildest non-team, the Defenders, he falls for Patsy Walker – the fittingly named Hellcat! But can romance blossom for a man with a soul as dark as Hellstrom’s?

Now this one I am excited about! I’m very into demons and all that kind of stuff, so this sounds perfect, especially with the new TV show coming soon!

Peter Porker and The Spectacular Spider-Ham

Not a dream! Not a hoax! Not an imaginary tail! (Get it?) Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham returns to the pages of his very own series! As if the swiney super hero’s recent adventures across the various dimensions of the Spider-Verse weren’t enough, Spider-Ham now finds himself jumping through time! And accompanied by Spider-Man (the human version), no less! It’s the human/porcine/arachnid Marvel team-Up you’ve been waiting for! But can Ham and Man prevent the horrors of – Aporkalypse Now?! What threat could be so dangerous – so deadly – that it imperils the Marvel Multiverse’s piggy protector, even with his cartoonish resistance to injury? Find out in one of the wildest adventures the Spider-Verse has ever seen!

Perfect for fans of Into The Spiderverse, or anyone who wants something fun and light to read!

Scream Curse Of Carnage by Clay McLeod Chapman

Out of ABSOLUTE CARNAGE comes a new symbiotic sensation – and it’ll be a Scream! Patricia Robertson, Andi Benton, Donna Diego – their stories have all been leading to this. Now one of Venom’s original offspring – and quite possibly the strongest – stars at last in her own adventure! But in the wake of Carnage’s assault, what remains of the Scream symbiote? Who is its host? What are its intentions? And what will a pair of web-slinging wall-crawlers have to say about Scream’s presence in New York? Meanwhile, a darkness has formed in the waters surrounding the Big Apple – something evil that beckons Scream with a siren song! With Venom nowhere to be found, this is now her problem – but what is its connection to Knull, god of the symbiotes?

Obviously, this is a spin off of the larger Absolute Carnage storyline (I have a guide coming in the next few weeks), so make sure you’ve read that before this!

Symbiote Spiderman – Alien Reality by Peter David

Turn back the clock to the days before Spider-Man discovered his symbiote suit’s true nature! Years ago, Peter Parker returned from the Beyonder’s Battleworld sporting a sleek, new black costume – with a dark and sinister secret! The “costume” was alive, an alien symbiote that would one day become Venom – but even these stylish new duds won’t protect him when the Hobgoblin, deadlier than ever, strikes! But where did Hobby get these uncanny new powers? Hopefully Doctor Strange can answer that question – because reality itself depends on it! Dread nightmares await as the mystery deepens and Peter’s world unravels – and the fate of the future lies in the hands of the Symbiote Spider-Man!

This is an interesting release, to say the least. This one ties into the Symbiote Spiderman series, which ties into Secret Wars storyline, so there’s a LOT of reading to do before getting to this one.

Spider-Gwen – Amazing Powers by Jason Latour and Tom Taylor

Spider-Gwen no more?! Gwen Stacy has lost her spider-powers – making this a very bad time to find herself in Frank Castle’s crosshairs! When the Mary Janes head to a haunted house, is Gwen along for the fun, or will she be one of the ghosts? Thanksgiving should be a happy time with friends and family – unless crime lord Matt Murdock and his ninjas crash the party! Is it time for Gwen to put a stop to the Kingpin of Crime – or does Matt have a thing or two to teach her? Plus: The Mary Janes get loud, and Gwen spends some time with her ever-expanding social circle – including Captain America! She-Hulk?! Her BPFF (best pig friend forever) Spider-Ham! And her new body-swapping bud, the All-New Wolverine!

I’ll admit, this series is not my favourite, but there’s a lot of great story in this! The world of SpiderGwen is fascinating – what with Matt Murdock as the Kingpin, and Frank Castle as part of the police – so it’s definitely worth checking out if you loved Into The Spiderverse. But, as always, it’s collecting issues 9-15, so there is one volume (SpiderGwen: Greater Power) to read first – so check that out before this one!

And that’s all new bind ups coming out this week! Which one are you most looking forward to?
